BMX In Barcelona

Sorry I’ve been MIA for a while, I haven’t been out adventuring/shooting much, the reason for this is that I have had a broken wrist for the last couple of months and I have just had an operation to fix this. This isn’t going to stop me shooting though as I have just returned from a trip to Barcelona with some friends, and I have another trip coming up soon which I will tell you about at the end of this post.

Like I have just mentioned I have just returned from a trip to Barcelona, the reason for the trip was for my friend Rob’s birthday. Myself, Rob, Bran and Max all spent a week together riding BMX on the streets of Barcelona, Spain. This was the first riding holiday I have ever been on and I can safely say it wont be the last. I actually flew out a couple of days after the others so missed out on a couple of riding days but that didn’t ruin the trip for me at all.

My first day in Barcelona was perfect for riding bikes, the sun was out and warm on your skin, the skies were clear with no chance of rain, and there was a slight breeze to keep you cool. Our first riding spot was a skatepark in the Favència district of Barcelona. The skatepark was smooth and flowy, perfect for cruising round with a broken wrist. Obviously Rob was pulling crazy tricks all over the place while I was shooting and Bran and max just cruised round coming up with lines and trying things they hadn’t done for a while. We session the skatepark for a good couple of hours before making our way up to a viewpoint Max had found nearby online.

We hiked up through a small neighbourhood for a good half an hour before reaching our destination. It was all well worth i though as our view over the city was incredible! We hung around for a while before slowly making our way back down and on to the next riding spot. Our next spot was a small urban park with lots to ride, banks, benches, walls and even a fountain. Everyone, aside from myself, had a good go on everything before we headed off to our final spot of the day. This one was a HUGE hip in a park, by the time we got there we had lost all the light so were having to make do with street lights to see what we were riding. Rob played around on the bank for a while as Bran was eyeing up something big. That something was a massive Tuck No-Hander over the hip, he took a couple of runs to get it right before sending the biggest no-hander I’ve ever seen! I only just managed to get the picture but missed focus which annoyed me, but as you can see above we had very limited light to work with.

Day 2 was a tourist day for us as the wind was way too strong to ride safely. Instead of wasting the day at the apartment we made our way over to La Sagrada Familia to check it out. I have actually seen the cathedral before on a family trip to the city but it’s still awesome to see. I’m amazed that it’s still under construction to this day. We didn’t go inside, I will do one day, but hung around outside instead snapping away with our various cameras and phones. Nothing else really happened that day other than some serious group chills.

Day 3 we were lucky and got a break in the wind which meant another riding day. This time we ventured across the city to a set of brink banks next to a small park, one mellower than the other. All the guys sent tricks over and on the banks before we headed on to a small skatepark near by as it started going dark. We rode the skatepark for a bit but it was filled with skateboarders so we didn’t get much chance to ride what we wanted.

Day 4 was super windy again but we headed out on the bikes anyway in hopes of the spots being sheltered, they weren’t. We actually ended up sat in a Burger King for an hour to hide from the wind. While we were out though we went down onto the beach to watch the waves. We called it a day early and headed back to the apartment to hide from the wind.

Day 5 was another no-go for riding so instead of sitting in doing nothing I opted to do some solo exploring. My main destination was La Rambla, I had visited before on previous visits to Barcelona but couldn’t remember what It was like. Not going to lie, but I was disappointed. I remember it being a much nicer area with lots going on but this time it just wasn’t. I remember La Rambla being THE shopping street in Barcelona but all I found was souvenir shops, news stands and overpriced restaurants. I did find a couple of shops and picked up a couple of extra t-shirts and a jumper so I could combat the cold a bit better. After an hour or so of wandering up and down I called it quits and made my way back to the apartment.

The last 2 days I didn’t shoot anything, Day 6 was spent at the apartment tidying, we did go for an evening pedal but only for about an hour before we got fed up with the weather and headed in, and packing and Day 7 was spent waiting around to go to the airport so nothing exciting happened. If I were to go to Barcelona again it would definitely be in summer when the weather is guaranteed to be better and more exploring can be done.

Ramp City

First of all I need to apologise. I’ve been silent for the past couple of months for a few reasons, the main one being busy at work and not getting out with my camera. Anyway, now that’s out of the way lets get started.

As you may know I like riding bikes, I’ve done blog posts in the past about my cycling outings. Previous posts have all be centred around mountain biking but this one is different, instead of riding my mountain bike I’m out on my old BMX. I headed out with Rob, Jay, Dale and Dom to a place called Ramp City in Blackpool, if you know you know, after work for an evening session. We all arrived at different times but when everyone was together the session really started to get going.

I rode for about an hour before falling and hurting my wrist. I didn’t particularly mind though because that meant I could focus on getting some pictures. As soon as I got my camera out Rob was boosting the vert wall in the street section, obviously I had to get a picture of his madness. After a short street section session we moved into the mini spine where Jay pulled a big tuck no-hander and an even bigger turndown. Rob mentioned that he had been eyeing up a line for a few years but never actually pulled it off. That line is a transfer from the spine quarter to the big quarter (see gallery below). It took him a couple of tries and 1 slam before he got it right before he moved on to throwing barspins into the mix.

From the mini spine the guys moved over to the other side of the park to the pyramid box area. As usual Rob was messing about with some odd tricks/lines and trowing some classic lines. After some messing around, Jay calling out tricks and Dom and Rob practising tail whips over the box Dale called out Jay, Rob and Dom do a train over the pyramid. Jay pulled another huge tuck no-hander, Rob pulled a tyre grab and Dom a table air.

om headed off shortly after this so we all moved back over to the street section where Rob and Jay tried to jump from the wembley gap to the stairs/rollers. Jay gave up after a few attempts but Rob was determined to make it. It took a while but he managed it and it looked SICK. After Rob pulled the gap Jay headed off as well leaving myself, Rob and Dale chilling and riding/skating till the session finished at 9pm. After the camera went away I still wasn’t able to ride properly so I cruised around on Robs skateboard just so I wasn’t sitting around getting cold.
