A Weekend In: Paris - Day 3

If you don’t know, myself and Emily look a short weekend trip to Paris at the beginning of September. I would recommend checking out my posts from Day 1 and Day 2 to get up to speed before continuing.

Day 3 started like any other, a short journey towards the city. This time though we started our sight seeing by stopping by Notre-Dame, we didn’t spend much time there on Day 1, to check it out in more detail. We snapped some pictures in the courtyard outside before joining the fast moving queue to have a look inside. Once inside we remembered that it was a Sunday, the big hint was that there was a service underway, but that didn’t detract from the experience, if anything it made it better!

We spend a good amount of time meandering round the cathedral, being careful not to make too much noise and soaking up the atmosphere. There is lots to look at and learn about inside the cathedral which makes it well worth the wait in line to get in. As we made our way round the back end of the cathedral and down the opposite side we noticed someone preparing some incense in a thurible. We hung around a couple of extra minutes to observe what was going on and toke some pictures. I actually believe this is one of the best photos I took the entire trip!

From Notre-Dame we took a stroll over the river and made our way down to the Louvre. Once there, whilst avoiding dodgy souvenir salesmen, we just admired the pyramid. We knew the pyramid was one thing we had to see whilst in Paris so we made sure to spend some time there and get as many pictures as possible. We took some funny ones, holding the tip of the pyramid, and some more normal ones, I even did a Through My Tens picture (which got feature on the Tens Instagram account) because That’s something I want to do whenever I can now. After spending some time around the outside of the pyramid we made our way down into the shopping centre below. We didn’t actually know there was a shopping centre at the Louvre until we arrived and did some research. We probably spent about an hour in there, grabbed something to eat and wandered in and out of shops before leaving. We decided not to go into the Louvre because we aren’t really art fans and didn’t want to pay the entrance fee just to see the Mona Lisa, maybe next time.

The Flamme de la Liberté was our next stop. We, again, walked down from the Louvre along the river to get there. We saw the Flame from the river cruise we did on Day 2 and made a note to go and check it out. There isn’t much to see here but I got a cool picture of the flame with the Eiffel Tower in the background. There were lots of flowers and pictures left on the flame as a memorial to Princess Diana, as it was the 19th anniversary of her tragic death at the bridge the flame sits above. There was also hundreds of love locks hanging along the chain fence that surrounds the flame.

From the flame we made a second visit to the Arc de Triomphe, but this time we crossed the round to get to the foot of it. When you get up close to the Arc you realised just how big it actually is! The thing is massive! Emily and I opted not to go to the top of the Arc, mainly because there was a big queue and because we just didn’t fancy it, so we just hung around the bottom. The detail and intricacy of the carvings all over the Arc is just incredible, I couldn’t imagine having to do something like that, the men and women who did deserve every bit of praise they got because it is just beautiful. We spent some time at the Arc admiring the carvings and sculptures, taking pictures, and just chilling out after all the walking we had done.

After our second visit to the Arc it was time to get something to eat. Emily, again, found an amazing gluten free restaurant so thats where we headed. On our way we headed down the Champs-Élysées before getting a train back down towards Notre-Dame. We arrived at Loulou’s and had another amazing meal, we both had a club sandwich and a coffee as well as some adult beverages to end another amazing day. We actually headed back to Loulou’s the following day for breakfast before heading off to the airport to catch our flight home. We both recommend Loulou’s to anyone if you’re looking for somewhere reasonably priced with good quality food and drink.

A Weekend In: Paris - Day 2

If you don’t already know Emily and myself spent a weekend in Paris at the start of the month, if you missed my Day 1 post then check it out HERE.

Day 2 started with a trip up the Eiffel Tower, we set off from our hotel at around 9am and after a couple of buses we arrived at our destination. Security is high around the tower so after a short security check we were in! As we were there so early the queue for tickets was fairly short so we got ourselves immediate access tickets to the top. The trip up to the observation decks was an interesting one, double decker lifts moving diagonally is definitely an experience. We skipped levels 1 and 2 and headed straight up to the top. The outside viewing area isn’t very big and was jam packed with people. We did manage to get to the edge to admire the amazing 360degree view over Paris. I got some awesome pictures from the top and think they were the best I took the whole trip!

Once the top started to get busier we made our way back down to level 2, then down to level 1 before heading back down to the base. We hung around the base for a while before heading over the road to the river for a spot of lunch. We grabbed a simple lunch, sandwich and chips, before jumping on a river cruise. We cruised down the river seine for an hour soaking up the sights, enjoying the sun and heat along the way.

From the river cruise our next stop was the Arc de Triomphe, we strolled over there trying to stick to the shady patches after being beaten on by the sun for an hour. Once there we snapped some pictures but didn’t hang around for long. The reason being was that we wanted to have a shop down the Champs-Élysées, where I bought a Paris Levi’s tee and emily picked up a shirt from Zara. When we made our way to the end we had a nosey round the most impressive Abercrombie and Fitch I’ve ever been in before grabbing a well deserved adult drink at a nice bar with the funniest waiter.

From our well deserved adult drink it was time to eat. Emily found a Gluten Free restaurant, called NoGlu, not too far from where we were that thats where we headed, passing the Fontaine des Mers and the Academie Nationale de Musique before reaching our destination, for an amazing meal that hit exactly the right spot. Our day ended here as we just made our way back to the hotel for the night.

If there are 3 things you need to do in Paris then the Eiffel Tower, a River Cruise and Arc de Triomphe/Champs-Élysées are definitely the 3 you need to do.

A Weekend In: Paris - Day 1

Recently myself and Emily took a trip to Paris, France. We booked the trip 5 days prior to going and got a really good deal on flights and our hotel. We flew from Manchester Airport at 7:05am to arrive in Paris at 9:40am local time. The first thing we did was head straight to the hotel, we stayed at the Mecure Paris Malakoff Parc des Expositions. After dropping most of our belongings we made our way up to the Catacombs. The Catacombs are a network of underground tunnels and quarries used to store the dead when the cemeteries started over flowing. We weren’t allowed to take pictures in the tunnels so sorry about that but I can highly recommend visiting if you are ever is Paris, just make sure you pre-book like we did or you will be stood in a line all day.

From the Catacombs we took stroll though the Jardin du Luxembourg, where I saw this cute little turtle fountain. As we strolled further though the park we were surrounded by people enjoying the afternoon sun. We reached the other end of the park and found the Luxembourg Palace. The palace is a huge architectural masterpiece and is such a beautiful building.

After gazing in awe at the palace we made our way towards the Pantheon, but before we made it to the Pantheon we stopped for a bite to eat. We ate at a beautiful french restaurant, I had a Croque Monsieur and Emily had an Omelette. From our food stop we carried on the the Pantheon, we didn’t go inside, just admired from the outside. The view away from the Pantheon was amazing, we could see the Eiffel Tower just peaking out over the trees and buildings.

From the Pantheon we headed over to Notre-Dame where we just hung out for a while. I had been having problems with my ribs prior to travelling and by this point in the day I was in agony, so instead of staying out any longer or going inside Notre-Dame we headed back to the hotel to I could take some pain killers and rest.

Our first day wasn’t overly exciting but it gave us a good taste of what to expect from the rest of our weekend.
