A Weekend In London - Day 2

Our second day in London started a little later than the first. Emily and I hung around at my family’s house until our we had to catch out train at 12:30pm and got into London at around 1pm. We headed straight to Fenchurch Street Station to meet Rhys at the Tower Of London shortly after. As we waited we grabbed some lunch and had some fun taking pictures. I got a really cool picture of The Shard through my Tens Sunglasses, I had seen people do ‘Through My Lens’ pictures on Instagram before and wanted to try my hand at one.

After meeting Rhys and one of his friends we crossed the Thames via Tower Bridge to wander down Queens Walk towards London Bridge where we stopped at London Bridge Grind for a coffee and snack. As we were walking down Queens Walk I hung back to snap some pictures of the skyline from the Walkie Talkie to the Gherkin, which I thought came out really well! We also came across some more cool summer events including live music and pop up cafes.

From London Bridge Grind we headed over London Bridge and to St. Paul’s Cathedral to check that out. We completely forgot it was a Sunday, so went in to admire the inside only to be treated by a church service. Oops. We could still wander round and gaze at the amazing architecture inside.

Our last objective for the day was to visit Buckingham Palace, which we failed at the previous day. This time though we made our way through St. James’s Park to avoid the cycle event. Today we succeeded and got the the gates of the palace, not a lot was happening but it was still cool to see. We got to see the Royal Guards standing to attention and marching back and forth. It was also just really awesome to just be there with Emily as we had both been before but never together.

From here chaos ensued. We had to get from the palace to Soho so Rhys could pick his luggage up from a friend, then we had to get back to Fenchurch Street Station where we caught the train back to Essex where my car was waiting for us. We had planned to get the train at 6pm but only ended up getting one at 7:30pm and back to my car at around 8pm.

When we arrived back in Essex I ran back to my Family’s house to get my car so I could pick Emily and Rhys up with his huge suitcase to make things easy. We made a pit stop back at my family’s house to say thank you and good bye before getting on the road home at 8:30pm. The drive home was very boring and took us exactly 4hours, as soon as we got home we unpacked the car and got straight in bed.

A Weekend In London - Day 1

Recently Emily and myself spent the weekend in London, we stayed with my relatives in Essex so we could spend some time with them. We arrived in Essex on the Friday evening after the WORST traffic we’ve ever experienced, I promptly got my hair cut by my cousin who is an apprentice at Jake’s Barber Shop in Hornchurch (I highly recommend the shop if you’re in the area). That evening myself, Emily, my cousin Mitchell and his girlfriend Brooke went out for a couple of social drinks and a long overdue catch up.

The next morning myself and Emily got up early and headed into London. Starting in Shoreditch we swung by the Boxpark to check out a pop-up shop being held by YouTubers Ben Brown and Steve Booker, I planned on buying a couple of tees but they had sold out of everything in my size. I was hoping to meet Ben and Steve but they weren’t due to be at the shop till later in the day. From there we headed over to The Breakfast Club for some brunch. We’d heard from many people about The Breakfast Club but had never been before, we’d also heard about crazy long wait times but we only actually waited about 15 minutes before being seated. I chose the All American breakfast with a Salted Caramel Milkshake and Emily opted for the Bacon and Eggs with an Ice Tea. Both food and drink were outstanding and the staff were super friendly and helpful.

From bunch we made out way to Covent Garden to check out the Tens Sunglasses pop-up shop, where I treated myself to a pair of the Classics in Black after losing my Oakley’s in the Caribbean a couple of months ago. From Covent Garden we headed down to Trafalgar Square to meet our friend Rhys who is over from Australia, we promptly headed down to Big Ben to start our weekend as tourists. From Big Ben we headed into Soho to get something to eat and so Rhys could leave his luggage with a friend who works in a great little restaurant called Rustiko’s.

We tried to walk down The Mall to visit Buckingham Palace but we stumbled across the Brompton World Championships, which were hilarious to watch but also very exciting and intriguing at the same time! We skipped the palace due to not being able to walk the rest of the way down The Mall so made our way over to Southbank to check out The London Eye and the view over to Westminster and Charing Cross.

As we crossed the river we found a small food/drink/summer festival on Southbank under The London Eye. We made the executive decision to check out the festival and grab a well earned drink. Rhys and Emily shared an Old Mout cider and I tried a Moo Brew beer. We chose to sit on the top of the main bar with an incredible view of the eye and north over the Thames. As the sun set I had to get a picture of the eye and of Charing Cross station as the sky glowed a vibrant orange. In my pictures of The London Eye I had to include my beer and my new sunglasses because it wouldn’t be complete London summer picture without them.

From our impromptu drinks stop we made our way back over Westminster Bridge where I snapped an amazing long exposure of Big Ben and Westminster Abbey, hand held may I add. We parted ways shortly after so me and Emily could head back to Essex for the night and so Rhys could head out for the night with his friend.

Trail Tuesday - Healey Nab

As you may not know I love mountain biking and a couple of guys i work with have started a weekly ride they’ve dubbed “Trail Tuesday” where we go ride a different, local trail every Tuesday. This week we hit up Healey Nab in Chorley. Healey Nab is a small trail built by local riders and has a wide variety of things to ride for all skill levels. The riding crew consisted of myself, Rob Lofthouse, Brandon Kirby, Dale Leeming and Ste Vickers.

Our ride started at about 6:30pm when we all met up after work. It was an incredibly hot evening so the ride started pretty slow but as the evening progressed and cooled down we all got into our rhythm and the riding got a whole lot more fun. I’d been saying for a while that I was going to take my camera down to a Trail Tuesday and this was the best week for it. Rob is the best rider I know to take pictures of and I have actually photographed him before. There was one line that he was hitting that made excellent images, like the one above.

Dale was practising his cornering on the black run so while I had my camera out I took a few pictures of him before I had a couple of runs myself. After a while we headed off to another area of the woods to him some singletrack. Rob and Bran had found this singletrack and had session’d it a few times on previous trips to Healey Nab. The section we session’d was 3, deep, loose, overgrown corners that are great for practising cornering and sliding. Rob demonstrated how it should be done before the rest of us had a go with varying results.

After a while of taking runs down the corners I got my camera back out to get some shots of the crew hitting the corners. I started out low to the ground amongst the action and shrubbery to get the classic cornering angles. After a while I wanted a different angle so climbed a tree and snapped form there for a while. I actually prefer that angle as you can see the whole line in 1 frame.

As we started to loose the light I got my flash out of my bag to make the most of a bad situation. Getting the right shot did prove to be hard at first but after a few runs I got the hang of it and got some cool shots. We finished riding at about 9:30pm when almost all the light was gone, we hiked back up the the main trail head and headed back out to the cars. On the way down the path to the bridal way was a fun blast down and was just as technical as it was fast. The bridal way is wide and fast with a number of big rollers designed to slow people down but being adrenaline junkies we hit them all at full speed and jumped off them landing as far away as we could.

Once we were back at the cars and re grouped we all packed our bikes away and said our goodbyes. I had a great drive home round the nearby reservoir before jumping on the motorway, and found some great locations for future photo missions.

If you like mountain biking and are ever up in Lancashire I would highly recommend taking a trip to Healey Nab.

July Update

So as you may have noticed I have missed a week posting on here. That is because of a couple of different reasons. The first being that I haven’t been out to photograph anything recently, pretty crap excuse I know but it’s true. The second reason being that I was away from home for 2 weeks on a training course to become a fully qualified bicycle mechanic, which I passed of course. The final reason for missing a post is that I have just started a new job, well not really new but returned to an old job as a summer temp.

This week I am hopefully going to find something to photograph for next Saturday. If you have any ideas for me then let me know, I’d love to hear what you want to see. I do have a couple of posts planned that will make it onto the blog but when that will be, I currently do not know. Hopefully sooner rather than later for my sake as well as yours!

In the mean time take a look around the site, check out the galleries and older posts and let me know what you think of them!
