Priory Lane Festival - Night

This is Part 2 of my Priory Lane Festival posts, if you missed Part 1 check it out before continuing.

The day portion of the festival ended at around 5pm and the night portion started at around 6:30pm leaving an hour and a half for set up. I actually nipped home in this break as there was nothing to shoot. The first act of the evening, Adam Williams, started just after 6:30pm and played until 7:30pm. Adam is a local musician who plays in local pubs and open mic nights and performs a mixture of acoustic covers and mash-ups of all genres, usually current and popular music. Adam is supremely talented and really deserves all the exposure he can get. I actually saw him playing at a local pub a week later by chance and his reception there was incredible!

Next on stage was Double R Arts, they performed a selection of songs from pervious shows they have put on in the past, mostly from the American Idiot musical. Some members of the group also performed solo, some in duets and 1 trio. All the members are amazingly talented, and all really know how to put on a show both as a group and as individuals. Their performance lasted for 45minutes, from 7:45pm to 8:30pm.

The 3rd act of the night was a local rock band who frequent the Priory Music Project, they go by the name Kings Mould. They are all young musicians who really know how to play their instruments and how to put on a show. They put 110% into their performance playing a mixture of covers and original songs. Their set also lasted 30minute and was a full frontal wall of energy and sound with the typical edgy, aggressive, punk attitude.

The final performance of the night was a comedy music duo called Ryan and Craig, who are hilarious may I add. They played a 45minute set, 9:30pm to 10:15pm, full of comedy covers, public jokes and a few inside jokes. They had a huge amount of crown participation and had everyone in stitches the whole time, they serenaded 1 audience member and got another up for an impromptu performance. If I get the chance I will definitely be seeing these guys again and I suggest you do too!

Photographing Radio Rivals

Who are Radio Rivals you may be wondering. Well Radio Rivals are a Preston based 4 piece Hip- Hop/Rock band. I know them through my fiend Michael who also happens to be the sampler in the band.  Radio Rivals are made up of Nathan (aka Rival Technique), Rapper/MC, Cooko, Guitar/Bassist, Michael, Sampler, and Warren, Drummer. They play Hip-Hop/Rock music and are extremely good at it.

I have previously worked with them to produce their first music video for their single Tuned In, you can see that below or on their YouTube Channel.

Working with them this time was very different. They were scheduled to perform at The Ferret in Preston as part of the new Hip-Hop Thursdays music night. This was the first Hip-Hop night that The Ferret has held and, coincidentally, it was also Radio Rivals first ever live performance. I had previously offered to photograph them if they ever needed it and this was the perfect opportunity. Well in advance of the performance I contacted the band and offered to come down and take some pictures for them, once that was confirmed I also contact the venue (The Ferret) to get their permission to use flash photography, which was also confirmed.

The night ran a little behind schedule with the acts only starting at around 9pm. Before Radio Rivals were 4 other acts, which I did photograph on behalf of the venue (if you would like to see those pictures you can do here on my Facebook page). All the acts varied massively throughout the night but we're all super talented and really impressed the small audience. Radio Rivals final got on stage at around 11:30pm and started as they meant to go on. With a bang!

They performed for about 40minutes and played a super intense set of all original songs. Myself and the audience were impressed beyond belief at the set and left us wanting more! Throughout the 40minutes I scuttled around in front of the stage to get as many pictures as possible of all members. Nathan and Cooko were easiest to photograph as they had nothing in front of them blocking my view and were both very animated, which made for some great photos. Michael and Warren both had things hiding them from certain angles, but I did my best and still came away with some great pictures.

Cooko has to be the most animated and intense guitarist I have ever seen perform live. He swing and jumps and headbangs his way around the stage, playing guitar extremely well at the same time. Nathan tends to stand more still but speaks with his hands and his facial expressions are great to photograph. Warren is the most precise drummer I've ever come across and finds time between hits to express himself with his head and arms. Michael keeps his head down but has so many things in front of him that he is always on the move, nodding his head along to the pulse of the song getting very in the zone.

Like I mentioned before Radio Rivals 40minute set was intense from start to finish and so impressive for their first live performance that they had the whole room cheering for more, they completely smashed it for their first live performance! Considering this was my first time photographing a proper gig, and using off camera flash, I am so happy with the pictures I came away with and I'm so proud of the band for doing so well and winning everyone over.

It would be awesome if you could give Radio Rivals a follow on their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as they deserve all the support they get, and if they ever play a show near you I whole heartedly recommend you go because they are just amazing to watch and they songs are killer!

Penwortham Live

So now I’m home I am going to have to keep myself busy to keep content coming for you. The style of posts/images are going to change and vary quite a lot but stick with me.

The first photo related thing I’ve done since being home is photograph a small local concert. The concert being Penwortham Live. Penwortham Live is held once a year at the end of May over 2 nights, a Friday and Saturday, over multiple venues around Penwortham. I based myself at the Priory Lane Youth & Community Centre, with a friend who was running the night at that venue.

The first act I photographed was a band called Vertigo & The Vines. They are a young, local, 3 piece band who play a mix of original songs and covers. Considering they are only young they are a very good act, play well together and have a lot of potential. Most of the shots I got of them were very dark and shadowy but I’m extremely happy with the the images I have in the gallery. Vertigo & The Vines played a 45 minute set and really pleased the crowd.

In between acts the organisers at the youth centre had a DJ playing original material whilst they set up for the next act. Again he was local and young but immensely talented and his original compositions and remixes were that impressive you'd think he’d being DJing/producing for much longer than he has.

Connor Banks - Penwortham Live, Priory Lane Youth Centre, Preston, England 21/05/2016

The 2nd act was a young teenage lad called Connor Banks, for his age he was as talented and precise as someone 2 or 3 times his age. He takes lots of influence from artists such as Ed Sheeran and Jack Garret, as he plays acoustically and uses a loop pedal to fill out parts of songs. Most of his set was filled with covers but he did throw in a couple of original songs to show his writing talent. Like Vertigo & The Vines he played a 45 minute set and seriously impressed the audience.

The final act I photographed was an all female vocal group called The Songbirds. The Songbirds varied in age from 15 up to 19 and consisted of 4 members. Each member was a beautiful singer and performed their own pieces throughout their 45 minute set. I actually only photographed part of their set as I had to leave the event early. I caught the first full group piece and 2 pieces of 3 of the 4 members before I had to leave. I was seriously impressed by each members talent and how well rehearsed they were.

Like I said I had to leave the event early but came away with pictures I was more than happy with. Penwortham Live is held every year at the end of May over a Friday and Saturday night. Entry to the event is £5 per wristband per adult and gets you into all the venues, entry for children is free.
